Understanding the best time to buy and enjoy British lamb
If you’ve ever wondered when lamb tastes its best, the answer is simple: when it’s in season. At Kings Farm, we believe in working with nature, not against it – which is why we only offer fresh lamb when it’s at its natural peak. But when exactly is lamb in season in the UK, and why does it matter?
Spring lamb vs. summer lamb
In the UK, most ewes (female sheep) give birth in early spring, between February and April. Lambs are typically weaned after a few months and ready for the table from late spring into summer and early autumn.
- Spring lamb (available from around May) tends to be smaller and milder in flavour.
- Summer and early autumn lamb (June to October) has had more time to graze and grow, developing a richer, more rounded taste – this is the sweet spot for many chefs and home cooks.
At Kings Farm, we allow our lambs to mature naturally on grass pasture, giving them the time they need to grow at a healthy pace. This approach delivers meat that’s full of flavour, with a tender texture and great eating quality.
Why seasonal lamb matters
Buying lamb in season isn’t just about taste – it’s also better for:
- Animal welfare – Lambs raised outdoors on natural grazing land live healthier, lower-stress lives.
- Sustainability – Grass-fed lamb raised on local pasture has a lower environmental footprint than imported or intensively farmed meat.
- Supporting British farms – Seasonal shopping helps keep local agriculture alive and thriving.
What about lamb in winter?
Lamb available in supermarkets in winter is often imported or comes from animals raised intensively indoors. Some may even be out-of-season UK lamb that’s been frozen.
At Kings Farm, we prefer to let our fields rest and our flock follow nature’s rhythm. That’s why we offer fresh lamb only when it’s naturally available – and why we encourage our customers to pre-order or register interest to avoid missing out.
